Before

  • Folded and brittle.

  • Surface dirt all over, especially on exposed side.

  • Print Media

  • Ink and pencil manuscript

Mending

  • While still moist, small sections were exposed for mending.

  • Working from the front, tears were aligned and lightly secured. Wedged gaps from expansion were realigned.

    • 9 gsm tissue and runny Aytex-P

  • Bridged pieces were nipped briefly to ensure flatteningand reduce buckles

  • Structural mends could then be completed on back of map with heavier tissue and dryer Aytex-P.

  • Left under weight to fully dry.

    • Blotters changed as needed.

Flattening and Washing

  • Map was humidified with a layered, plastic humidity chamber.

    • Wicking occured despite precautions.

  • Map was washed betwween layers of spun polyester to prevent tidelines from wicking.

    • One deionized bath, followed by two calcium baths.

  • Kept humdified under gentle restaint until mending could be finished.

Unfolding

  • The map was gently unfolded to expose all sides.

  • Extensive dry cleaning with sponges to remove surface dirt.

  • Media testing of print and manuscript in anticipation of humidification
